• Descrição: Paisagem do Curral das Freiras. Em primeiro plano, do lado esquerdo, um caminho junto a ravina que termina com uma árvore de grandes dimensões, destacando-se uma figura encostada. Em plano de fundo, do lado direito, em traços esboçados, encontra-se o Pico Grande.
• Origem/Historial: Ilha da Madeira. Inglaterra. O desenho integrou originalmente o álbum "Sketches by Emily Geneviève Smith". Deste álbum encontram-se no Museu Quinta das Cruzes 98 desenhos e a capa do referido álbum (mqc 1084). Este desenho vem referido nos diários de Emily Geneviève Smith (SMITH, 2003. Ver Bibliografia), com data coincidente com a datação inscrita no desenho (26 de Novembro de 1841) e 2 de Dezembro do mesmo ano: "Friday, 26 November. Quinta da Nord. Expedition to the Curral (...) The day was perfect and cloudless and, though at so great an elevation, it was quite warm. The tints were lovely and the views varying and magnificent. The road was quite dangerous in places and it required a strong nerve to look at the precipice beneath where there were patches of verdure and splendid old trees, with goats and sheep grazing. We crossed the rocks of one torrent. I walked a long way of the dangerous part and was then carried again till we had come to the object of our ride - 10 miles - the Curral, a splendid valley surrounded by mountains which come precipitously down to the bottom of fine cliffs of basaltic formation. Craggy masses also jut up and make distinct ravines; one of these which forms the Socorridos Ravine is very striking. We clambered a rugged promontory and saw the Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain in Madeira, 5000 feet high. The shape of Pico Grande with its natural turrets of rock is, however, more striking. Near it, looking like a horse's saddle is the Janella whence both the Curral and Liera and Agua are to be seen. At the bottom to all appearance are the Church and the village, but they are 500 feet from the bed of the torrent. (...) We then dined on the summit of a lofty ridge and I sketched, having gone considerably down into the ravine, and where the road was quite awful, the view amply repaid me. Saw the real Jil tree overhanging the rocks." (p. 106-107) "Thursday, 2 December. Quinta da Nord. (...) I finished my sketch of the Curral (...)" (p. 107)
